Artist: Jonas Hornehoj 3417 x 4271 It took four trips to the Komodo National Park to finally be able to visit Gili Lawa. 2 weeks prior to my first visit, Gili Lawa was declared shut for visitors, due to a fire that spread the entire island and left the land charred. On my 4th return visit to the national park over 4 consecutive years, we tried our luck and approached the island on a calm morning, knowing that our crew would be among the first to revisit Gili Lawa if our entry was granted. Each of the larger islands in the national park have rangers that live there. When we approached the island, we were told by the rangers that we still weren’t allowed on the island, but with a drone permit, we could fly our drones from the boat. Game on. Four years after Gili Lawa suffered from the inferno, this island is still an entirely different color to all other islands in the Komodo National Park, the ‘Odd One Out’.
