One of the things I was really looking forward to doing in southern USA was visiting a plantation. Perhaps because of one of my favourite novels “The Book of Negros” by Lawrence Hill about a woman who was a slave on an indigo plantation in South Carolina. It was kind of odd walking around imagining it was the place where the heroine from my novel was a slave. In 1743 these Live Oaks were planted as an approach to the estate at Boone Hall Plantation in Charleston, South Carolina. It took two centuries for the branches, draped in Spanish Moss, to form this incredible arch.
