We all face times in life where we feel beat down and weathered from the storms in our lives. I was thinking about this as I faced one of my biggest storms on the day I took this photo - saying goodbye to my mom. I watched the waves crash against the pier and thought about how broken I felt, and at the same time, felt such peace from choosing to photograph a place that evening that meant so much to me. I grew up here and every part of Newport Beach has memories of my mom, so it was a healing moment at the same time. The Newport Pier has stood for decades and as I sat there, it was a reminder to me that just as it has weathered its storms, I would as well.
