One of the reasons that I love photography so much is that I can lose myself in it. It is so therapeutic and healing, and I needed that on this day. I flew out from Colorado and said goodbye to my mom on this August afternoon in 2020. She was losing her years-long battle with Frontal Temporal Dementia and died a couple of days later. I went out alone that night to shoot, cry and process my immense loss. I stood in the water at the Newport Pier in Newport Beach where I was raised, with waves lapping up around the bottom of my tripod and my skirt. I photographed each time the waves hit the pilings. While the waves hitting the pilings were not very strong, I thought about all the times I had seen this pier in large sets of waves and storms, and the power the water had crashing against the wooden posts. While I watched these softer waves over and over, I started to think about how many times this pier has weathered its storms and I knew I could survive through mine too.
