Description

In most Polynesian mythologies, Maui is a demigod who accomplished many wonders. He is also husband to Hina. It is said that when Maui was young, the sky was very low, preventing the trees from growing and the people from walking upright. He decided that he should do something about it. He then visited a Kahuna (a Hawaiian priest and healer) and got a magical symbol tattooed on his arm, as a way to prepare for the battle to come. To gain strength, he also drank from an old woman's gourd, that made him powerful enough to lift up the sky. After a great struggle, Maui was able to push the sky beyond the mountains, lifting the edges over the ocean, where it remains to this day. Accomplishing that exploit allowed nature to grow and thrive. Humans were able to walk tall and evolve. It is said that clouds never stay too long upon Polynesian islands, as they are scared to be thrown away so far by Maui that they could never return.
