Description

This painting began with the vintage Crayola White Chalk found in my Mother's basement during her move. I first thought the entire painting was the chalk, but I was wrong. It took sometime to think this through and I remembered elementary school. My trip down grade school memory lane brought to the forefront of my mind blackboards, erasers, clapping erasers on Fridays outside, chalk or the crazy sound one can make with it, and cursive handwriting. I also thought about my Stepson, who can not read cursive because it was no longer taught when he was in elementary school or many other grade schools, for that matter. Connecting the two, the lack of cursive education and my memories as a student, pulled my heartstrings. I remembered when I learned to write cursive and gained entry into the big girl club. It was a milestone, one that many children have now missed. May "Ode to Cursive" bring wonderful memories for some of you and for others to google. xo
