The county ignores the damage, finding it cheaper to leave the highway in ruins than to fix decades-old bridges only tourists and mildly unhinged desert rats cross. These daring types ignore the destroyed trusses, carving their own off-road work arounds through the desert. Skirting a barrier is no match for the siren song of fresh vistas and open road. A rebellion of curiosity within a battle against never-ending expansion. The road is never truly closed, but for those who heed the warning of the desert’s extremes, it is the end of the line, for now.
