A silent drop of embers in a blackened forest lit only by moonlight. Then a crash of trees, branches falling in the darkness. A quick set of frames, compose, focus, hardhat on tight. Click for the frame, pack up and leave before a tree falls in the road. Feeling like I cheated death, looking into the subtlety of light and how it’s magnified via long exposure, each falling piece of ember from the tree streaking across the frame, illustrating time and movement forever captured. Another crash of a 200 foot tree falling, jarring me back to reality, driving back out of the inferno. The Railroad Fire burned off Highway 41 between the town of Oakhurst, CA and Yosemite National Park in 2017. An area heavily impacted by drought, bark beetle kill, and record temperatures that all impacted the severity and frequency of fires in the area.
