This image with dancer Johanna Pellerin was taken in June 2020, towards the end of the first devastating Covid-19 wave in New York City. By then, like all performers, dancers did not have an opportunity to practice or perform for several months. We felt save enough to meet outdoors, always keeping a distance, the face mask a constant companion. At first I wanted to ask Johanna to pose for the shot without it, but then thought otherwise, thus creating an image that is a testament to the enduring power of dance.
