This shot took more than an hour. My goal was to capture the sea spray up around the rock. I kept trying to compose the scene, but the waves were too small. I waited, taking pictures of each wave rolling in, hoping each time that this would be the one. But none of them were dramatic enough. This went on for an hour. Hundreds of pictures, but none of them were quite right. I decided to give up. But as I was putting my tripod away, I saw a huge swell approaching the rock. I grabbed the camera, and BAM! It was the shot I had been waiting for! Humorously, I had expected the birds to scatter when a big wave broke, but they didn’t seem to mind getting soaking wet. But in my mind, that just added to the shot. The moral of the story is: photography is the art of patience. You can’t rush the perfect shot. Sometimes that perfect shot never shows up, and other times you get lucky. But either way, you have to ride whatever wave you’re given. (And don’t mind getting wet along the way).
