The Lisbon Metro (Portuguese: Metropolitano de Lisboa) is the metro (subway) system of Lisbon, Portugal. Opened in December 1959, it was the first subway system in Portugal. Thanks to the creativity of Portuguese architects and plastic artists, the 56 stations that branch out across the capital have become, in 70 years of history, much more than a place of passage or discouragement at rush hour. The artistic plurality of Metropolitano de Lisboa makes it one of the most beautiful in Europe. Metro expanded, renovated and brought art even more “underground”. There are more than 70 years of history, which intersect with the progress of mobility in Lisbon and with the art that gives color, light and humanizes metro stations.
