Description

The Georges Fire burns in the eastern Sierra near Mount Whitney Portal and the Manzanar Internment Camp, July 2018. The blaze was stoked by strong Mono Winds, pushing fire across sparsely populated and vegetated hillside, but causing a rapid rate of spread. I drove up to this fire in the middle of the night, staying up until dawn on the journey to capture fire behavior in a new region I hadn’t yet covered for the Terra Flamma project. The blaze was visible from the town of Lone Pine, a burning mountain dancing in the night from miles away. The drive to and from the fire took longer than my presence photographing, a testament to the remote nature of these fires across a large state. Thankfully the blaze did not injure anyone or damage any homes, and hikers were able to evacuate the area. Once the winds died, so did the fire. 7707x5430 pixels
