Finding foregrounds for storm photography is difficult. Wind turbines, abandoned farms, and the occasional wildflowers are the few options for scenery. Following a day-long storm chase, I decided to venture into a small town for a different style of foreground. Setting up next to a tractor repair shop and a grain silo, I waited for the lightning. Looking into the rear flanks of the storm, I was seeking anvil crawlers. Sometimes called "spider lightning," these massive bolts are cloud-to-cloud lightning spanning for miles within the clouds. After waiting patiently, it finally happened; a massive crawler erupted over the small town of Burlington, Colorado, USA. Occurring just as a car drove by, I captured taillights and lightning both.
