Usagi is the Japanese term for "rabbit," but in the Shinto religion, it also refers to a mythical creature who serves as a messenger for the gods. Since ancient times, the rabbit has been favored in various forms of art in Japan, including drawings, paintings, ceramics, and textiles, as well as being used as a motif in a variety of crafts and confections. It can still be found in a wide range of contexts today, from art to women's accessories like a mask. Rabbits only move ahead and never backward, thus they've long been seen as a lucky emblem of progress. The rabbit is also a mythical creature that represents cunning and self-devotion.
